Ebbsfleet Garden City streets to be named after Beatles, Oasis and Paul Weller albums

In honour of the Dartford-born painter and illustrator, Sir Peter Blake, a new housing development in Ebbsfleet Garden City will name several streets after popular rock and pop albums he worked on.

Born in Kent in 1932, Blake studied at Gravesend Technical college before becoming the Godfather of British pop art in the late 1950s.

Besides the Beatles, Oasis and Paul Weller, he also worked with other famous names in the music world such as Eric Clapton and Madness. Local galleries still exhibit his work.

Last month the cabinet considered street names for development in the southern parcel of the Alkerden neighbourhood in Ebbsfleet Valley.

Among them were ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’, ‘Stop the Clocks’, the Gallagher brothers’ compilation album from 2006, and ‘Dragonfly’ by The Jam. They also feature titles of Blake’s paintings such as Penny Black, Girl in a Poppy Field, and On the Balcony.

Following discussions with Dartford council leader Jeremy Kite, consultation with members, the emergency services, Royal Mail and the developer, together with a site plan, street names were chosen.

Sir Peter Blake, Sgt Pepper, Clocks, Dragonfly, Penny Black, Poppy, and Balcony were all approved.
